How Did THAT Happen? Part Two.

Updated: Jul 10

Confused and stressed young woman

If you didn't see last week's part one blog on avoiding easy-to-avoid errors on your invitations, pause and read that before you continue on with this one. I'll wait for you...

(And speaking of easy-to-avoid errors, there's an intentional spelling mistake in this week's post. Click the button at the end to tell me what it is and I'll design your invitation for FREE - no, that's not the typo!)

Now that you've (re)taken a moment to evaluate all the details that need to be on your invitation, let's consider a few other things that will take your invitations from nice to "beautiful!"

These days, wedding stationery doesn't have to fit into any other box than the crucial details being included. After that, it's all up to you. But this can then be problematic, especially if you want to make them yourself or even if you use an online template. (Hint: get them COMPLETELY customized by talking to me and take the stress off!)

Busy, busy, busy

Overcrowded busy advertising
Even if you do speak Chinese, how does your eye filter through all of these? Yikes!

Have you ever looked at two ads side by side, whether online or on paper, and wondered why your eye is drawn to one layout over another? Or why you skim over a social media ad but you linger on another just a few minutes later? Chances are one of the factors is simplicity.

In the age of "scrolling," we want to get the most information we can from something in the shortest time possible. It's one of the reasons I'm so critical of freeway billboards - you have 3 seconds to tell your reader why they should use your business. 3 seconds. That goes by faster than you think. (Unless it's rush hour when no one is rushing anywhere! So why do we call it that? Hmmm.)

While people will take more than 3 seconds to read your invitation, it's still wise to keep your invitation simple rather than busy. Invitations that are just crammed with two many words or colors or photos can hide the really important details.

black and white hard to read invitation
Can you read this cute and funny invitation? Yeah, me neither.
  1. Fonts need to be easy to read. I know, I'm back on that font thing again, but it really is so important. Don't use more than two fonts; it gets messy if you do.

  2. Choose font colors wisely. A splash of color is better than a 3rd font but notice the word "splash" - you don't want to go crazy here either. Yes, pick colors that match your wedding if you want, but you don't have to include every single color in your bouquet. Hint: Research complementary colors for the main one you use to keep it all from clashing. And think CONTRAST.

  3. Stay away from TOO everything. You want your guests to have the really important details - the NEED to know - but decide what those are and stop there. (I'd like to stop there to drive home the point, but ... use the back of your invitation, a separate insert or your wedding website to fill them in on what they might WANT to know. Don't clutter the main invitation with TOO many words.) Don't send it TOO early or wait TOO long. The waiting too long problem is pretty simple - guests have already made plans for that date or there isn't enough time to organize travel. Sending them too early increases the risk of people setting your invitation aside to plan their calendar later - and then forgetting about it. Timing is everything. 6-8 weeks before the wedding is a good rule of thumb for invitations. Save the Date cards are for sending earlier.

  4. Proofread. And proofread again. And again. And have someone else proofread. Need another set of eyes? I'll gladly proofread it for you.

In summary: Avoiding mistakes +

a clean look +

concise information =

a beautiful invitation you'll be pleased to send out and your guests will love to receive.

And if you're just not happy with everything you've come up with on your own, let's talk. I know we can find a solution that you'll love.
